Safe participation – a better way to play

Safe participation means creating spaces where everyone in sport, recreation, and physical activity can enjoy themselves, give their best, and feel supported. It’s about building environments where people want to be, where they feel safe to grow, connect, and succeed.

The concept of “safe participation” goes beyond the familiar idea of “safe sport.” It considers four key types of safety—physical, emotional, psychological, and cultural—so everyone can feel protected, valued, and included. When people feel safe, they can push themselves to be their best!
This approach comes from the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity, and Recreation Council (ISPARC), whose insights we deeply appreciate.
