Psychological Safety

Psychological Safety

What Is It?

Helps you communicate, share ideas and be empowered.

Psychological safety is about creating an environment where people feel fearless in taking risks, trying new things, and contributing to discussions, all of which are essential for learning, growth, and innovation.

The belief that you can speak up, share ideas, raise concerns, or admit mistakes without fear of being punished, humiliated, or excluded is central to psychological safety.

Psychological Safety is created when everyone feels comfortable and empowered to:

  • Engage in open and honest communication
  • Feel confident to ask questions, propose ideas, or raise concerns without fear of embarrassment or retaliation
  • Know that mistakes will be treated as opportunities to learn, not reasons for blame
  • Take risks, experiment, and explore new approaches in a supportive setting
  • Trust that their contributions will be valued and respected, even if they challenge the status quo

Psychological Safety — Myth vs Fact

Athletes should respect their coaches and do as they’re told. They shouldn’t question their training plan or offer ideas.

Fact
