Cultural Safety

Cultural Safety

What Is It?

Helps create an environment that recognizes, embraces and celebrates different cultural identities.

Cultural safety is all about creating inclusive and respectful environments where everyone’s cultural identity is recognized, valued, and celebrated.

It goes beyond just acknowledging differences by actively building understanding, respect, and inclusion in every part of sport and recreation.

Cultural Safety is created when we:

  • Recognize and respect everyone’s cultural backgrounds, values, and beliefs
  • Prevent discrimination, prejudice, and bias based on cultural differences
  • Include culture, language, and traditions in programs to build pride and a sense of identity
  • Encourage open conversations about culture to build understanding and respect
  • Ensure spaces, practices, and policies support and include people from all cultural backgrounds

Cultural Safety — Myth vs Fact

Myth

You don’t have to make it clear that people from different cultures and backgrounds are welcome to join your team. They will voluntarily join.

Fact

Unless it’s clear that everyone is welcome and efforts are made to reach out to new and diverse communities, people may not feel safe joining your team or club.
