Emotional Safety – Feeling Supported While You Play

What is Emotional Safety?
Emotional safety means feeling valued, respected, and free from harm while you enjoy sport, recreation, or physical activity. It’s what helps us connect with others, have fun, and do our best.
Here’s what emotional safety can look like:
✨ Positive communication—kind and encouraging words make a big difference.
🤝 Supportive relationships—teammates, coaches, and friends who lift each other up.
🌈 Inclusive spaces—where everyone feels welcome, no matter their background.
🛠️ Helpful feedback—focused on growth, not criticism.
💖 Caring for feelings—understanding and managing stress and emotions.

💡 How you can protect your emotional safety:
- Speak up! Let others know what you need to feel comfortable.
- Set boundaries. It’s okay to say no or take a break when you need it.
- Find support. Talk to a friend, coach, or trusted adult if you’re struggling.
- Be kind to yourself. Mistakes happen—it’s part of learning and growing.
- Cheer each other on! Celebrate wins (big or small) and encourage others.
When we prioritize emotional safety, we create spaces where everyone feels good and can shine.
This approach comes from the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity, and Recreation Council (ISPARC), whose insights we deeply appreciate.
Together, we’re building a better way to play.
